Severe Storms Cut Chile Copper Production to Lowest July Since 2011

Storms lashing Chile’s northern mining heartland pushed the country’s copper production down 9.4% in July, tightening supply from the world’s largest source of the metal.

At 403,424 metric tons, output for the month fell from 445,322 tons a year earlier, statistics agency INE reported. It was the weakest July reading since 2011.

INE tied the drop to unfavorable weather in the north of the country that disrupted the normal production process, with severe storms hitting operating areas and interrupting both mining and processing. Beyond the weather, scheduled maintenance at several large sites in the key mining sector further trimmed volumes during the month, adding to a run of operational setbacks producers have faced.

Firmer copper prices have offered some cushion, lifting margins even as producers struggle to hold tonnage steady. State miner Codelco recently reported stronger profit thanks to the price rally, though disruptions at its mines continued to weigh on output.

Copper sits at the heart of Chile’s export earnings, so month-to-month swings in output reverberate through the national economy and the international markets that depend on the country for supply. Rising use of the metal in electrification and grid expansion has kept demand expectations high, sharpening attention on any shortfall from major producing regions.

The path ahead hinges on how fast northern operations bounce back from storm damage and wrap up their maintenance work. That timing will determine whether July’s decline was merely a weather-driven blip or the opening of a softer stretch.
